Memorial plaque dedicated to the writer Bitė Vilimaitė

Bitė Vilimaitė-Šukienė (born 16 February 1943 in Lazdijai – 11 October 2014 in Alytus) – Lithuanian writer. She is a master of the laconic work, concentrating a large amount of artistic information in a very small aesthetic form – novellas. Born in Lazdijai, spent her childhood and adolescence in Kaunas, later lived and worked in Vilnius, the last four years of her life she lived in Lazdijai region Šlavantai county. She spent the last four years of her life in the village of Avižieniai.

The writer was nominated:
1975 – Žemaitė Literary Prize;
1992 – Winner of the Best Book of the Year for the collection of short stories “Čiuožyklos muzika”;
1997 Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė Prize, for the book “Užpustytas traukinys”;
2003 Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Art, for the collection “Papartynų saulė”;
2003 Lithuanian Institute of Literature and Folklore Literature Prize, for the collection of novels “Papartynų saulė”.

In 2021, a butterfly “landed” next to the Public Library – a commemorative plaque (by Lazdijai sculptor Algis Kasparavičius) commemorating the memory of the novelist and laureate of the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts, Bitė Vilimaitė, in her home town of Lazdijai.
